How the Models Work

The Simple Trend model looks at medal counts from the last five Olympic cycles and draws a straight line forward. It works best for countries with steady programs. The Population-Adjusted model divides medals by population size, then applies the trend. This helps smaller nations show their true efficiency. The Investment Correlated model uses a proxy for national sports funding — public data on federation budgets and facility investments — to estimate future performance. It tends to be more optimistic for countries that are ramping up spending.

Load the USA vs China preset, set the sport to Swimming, and pick the Population-Adjusted model. The projector shows that while the USA still leads in raw medals, China's per-capita efficiency has been climbing faster over the last two cycles. Common Mistakes

Don't compare winter and summer sports in the same projection without adjusting for the different number of events. The projector separates Summer and Winter Games data automatically. How does the Population-Adjusted model work?

It divides a country's total medal count by its population in millions, then multiplies by a constant to make the numbers readable. This gives a 'medals per million people' score. The projection then applies the country's recent trend slope to that adjusted score.

Can I compare more than three countries at once?

The interface lets you select up to five countries. More than that can make the comparison chart hard to read. If you need a larger dataset, use the Export CSV feature to pull the raw numbers into a spreadsheet.

Why do some projections look flat or negative?

If a country's medal count has been declining over the last few cycles, the Simple Trend model will project that decline forward.
